How to Build Healthy Sleeping Habits

Sleep hygiene is a new term for an old problem. It is basically the term used to refer to your sleeping habits. A lot has changed over the last couple of years and more people than ever go to bed tired and wake up exhausted. We have some tips that will help you develop healthy sleep habits so you can get back to doing the things you love.

Create a Routine for Bedtime

Creating a simple routine that you follow each night before bed will help you fall asleep much faster. This series of actions will signal to your body that it is time to pack away the stress of the day and prepare for sleep. Your routine should begin at least half an hour before your head hits the pillow. Consider taking a shower and then settling down with a candle and a book. Not only will the hot water cleanse your body it will also soothe your senses.

Watch What You Eat

What you eat before bed will affect the quality of your sleep. If you are trying to get rest, then you should avoid large amounts of sugar and all caffeine at least an hour and a half before bed. In most cases, you should limit your coffee or tea to the early evening and stop completely once the sun goes down. The same goes for sugar. It tends to give you a boost of energy which dies out pretty quickly.

Make Time for Physical Activity

Your body needs to burn energy in order to stay healthy. Make a point of working out or at least taking a walk every day to burn off excess energy. If you have a pet, you can take them for a walk or a run in the evening or you can hop on your treadmill for a quick trot. You will notice that you sleep much quicker and more deeply after exercising for at least 15 minutes each evening.

Create a Relaxing Environment

Most people need calm and quiet in order to drop off to sleep. Make your room your evening oasis by closing the curtains, turning on some white noise, and bundling up for good measure. Lavender sprayed on your pillowcases is a great way to boost your relaxation efforts so you drop off into a dream state.
